Abnormal psychology has its origin over 100 years ago but there are several ideas which make up the nucleus of abnormal psychology they are known as the core concepts. The core concepts have existed from the beginning of abnormal psychology and although the evolution of the field of psychology has grown, the concepts are standard. The efforts to define abnormal from abnormal circulate around the basic foundation or core concepts of abnormal psychology. According to
Hansel and Dammar (2008), the core concepts are the importance of the context in defining and understanding the abnormality, the continuum between normal and abnormal behavior, cultural and historical relativism in defining and classifying abnormality, advantages and limitations of diagnosis, multiple causality, and the connection between mind and body (p. 3) . The earlier method for defining an abnormal individual was if he or she met five criteria, if the individual was help seeking, irrationality/dangerous, deviance, emotional distress and, significant impairment (Hansel & Dammar, p. 0, 2008). The criteria came to be known as the Hides criteria and although it gave the characteristics of a mentally abnormal person, the criteria had limitations. The criteria were partially useful and partially useless. The most widely used criteria for determining abnormalities were emotional distress and significant impairment of functioning (Hansel & Dammar, p. 15, The problem with certain criteria being useless was because in some 2008). Cases certain criteria bordered on being relative both culturally and historically.
Another problem defining abnormal behavior was the thin line between the two. Complexity lied in where to draw the line and pinpoint when the normal behavior crosses into abnormality. There are no definitive answers when it comes to defining psychopathology because of the complexity of determining the limits for normal versus abnormal. The American Psychiatric Association published a book titled the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. This book which is frequently revised, list several hundred different mental disorders and provides instructions on how to identify them.
The book gives an acceptable definition for psychopathology ND is the standard for diagnostic practice in the United States (Hansel & The next issue relating to the development of abnormal Dammar, p. 15, 2008). Psychology is related to the psychosocial, biomedical, and coloratura theoretical perspectives. According to Strauss, John (1979), the first step in bridging the gap between the psychopathology of the individual and the influence of coloratura doctors is by attempting to determine at what point in a person’s t lie e the various coloratura characteristics have their impact (p. 98). The areas to exam to find the mint of impact range from when two couples unite and become intimate, at the beginning of birth, early childhood, to the period Just before the onset of the abnormality (Strauss, John p. 398, 1979). According to Strauss, John (1979), when the point of impact is located it then becomes easier to identify the coloratura influences on psychiatric disorders as social class, life events, labeling processes, the treatment system, presence of protective social supports, and cultural determinants of symptom type (p. 398). Medical model address the impact of drug treatment on psychopathology. According to Bushman, ; Hairier (1983), Genetic transmission and drug response research continue to inspire biological approaches to the puzzles of psychopathology. The traditional medical Del assumes discrete categories for well an ill individuals and a single biological factor overwhelm psychosocial factors. The clinical interview in all branches typically begins with he chief complaint (p. 3. ) According to Bushman, ; Hairier (1983), a biological marker is a measurable indicator of a disease which may or may not e causal.
The current state of the illogical approaches to psychopathology is chaotic, o markers have been accepted despite the fact that dozens have resulted in promising if not dramatic, results.
