Abstract :The field of Information Systems has seen constant development and has advanced in the course of recent years. In any case, the fascinating truth here to comprehend is that how have the exploration issues developed and the basic factors that have been continually driving the advancement.
In this article, I would like to discuss the way Information Systems have evolved from traditional bookkeeping to current ERP and MIS for business and also discuss on what potential future could be for Information Systems.Definition :An information system, therefore, can be defined as a set of coordinated network of components which act together towards producing, distributing and or processing information.Business firms and different associations depend on information systems to deal with their operations, interact with their clients and providers, and to contend in the fast-paced market. Information Systems are utilized to run between authoritative supply chains and electronic markets. In this digital era, there is a constant reference to the way the data or information is stored and retrieved from various systems and interfaces.Hence a deeper understanding of evolution and trends would amplify the vision of a professional who chooses to travel in this path. Evolution :Over the past few years, Information Systems field has made a rapid growth from large mainframe systems to today’s cloud and mobile computing.
In early days of Information Systems, going back to late 50’s and early 60’s Transaction Processing Systems(TPS) were used to process data obtained from business transactions. Later on, using Management Information System (MIS) data from TPS was used by executives and top management to create reports that aided them in their decision-making process. Reports created by MIS were not sufficient to meet the decision-making needs of the management and the idea of Decision Support System was conceived, then came the era of personal computers when tools like spreadsheet and word aided in other models like Executive information systems, Knowledge Management Systems and so on.The next stage of development was rapid and then came the famous ERP(Enterprise Resource Planning) which integrated all the business functions involved. With the advent of the internet, e-commerce gained importance and today the modern day Information systems still revolve around the age-old record keeping, reporting, and accounting but only thing that has changed is the way these are automated with very little or no manual intervention.Trends:The scope of Information Systems is changing as new advances are presented and existing technologies are challenged, making it basic for MIS experts to remain over current patterns and keep on developing their innovative insight. Big data analytics, Data mining, Cloud computing, Mobile computing and smart machines will be the technologies that would be in limelight over the next few years.
