Guan, EmilyMr. WiskinCHV-2O122 January 2018The Significance of Power and PowerlessnessSince the dawn of time, power has been prominent in the course of human existence. In the perspective of different individuals, the dominance of power portrays a huge role to one’s embryonic royalty. In society today, humans still depend on a pack. With a strong leader, they provide guidelines and motivation so the pack does not diminish. They also have great discipline and want to inspire others to follow the same path. However, to have power comes with great responsibility. Those who are fortunate to have such power, often take advantage of it. It is apparent that politicians, media moguls, and ones whom are powerless are affected by this source mankind has called “power”. Political power constructs and restrains citizen’s outlook towards the leader and the governing system. Occupying a political position means having the ability to change the behaviour of other people involved through persuasion and/or manipulation. For example, Niccolò di Bernardo dei Machiavelli was a great philosopher and historian in the late 15th century to early 16th century. Machiavelli declared vices as necessary for success such as murder, dishonesty, and selfishness. He focused on politics and how selfishness or morality cannot exist for the politician because the politician strives for power and power cannot come without doing what must be done regardless of how evil such can be deemed. Friedrich Nietzsche also proposed his concept about power. He suggested the main drive within humans and was striving for the highest position one can possibly maintain. This desire for achieving one’s goals would create different manifestation of themselves so they can become the highest version of themselves. Another popular figure who takes power for granted is Donald Trump. Though Trump is not as deceptive or manipulative as Machiavelli or Nietzsche, he shows many characteristics of being a dysfunctional politician . In a 2005 recording, Donald J. Trump talks about women in vulgar terms to Billy Bush, “You know I’m automatically attracted to beautiful — I just start kissing them. It’s like a magnet. Just kiss. I don’t even wait. And when you’re a star, they let you do it, you can do anything. Grab them by the p***y, you can do anything.” It is unfortunate for Americans to view Trump as someone who is expected to be a great leader. Not only did Trump made unpleasant comments about women, he uses his fame and power to get what he wants. Thus, creating a lot of controversy in the media whether Donald Trump is a good President or not.The media is a place for broadcasting, publishing, and creating projects. Media of today is playing an outstanding role in creating and shaping of public opinion and strengthening of society. Harvey Weinstein is an American film producer who has been reportedly accused of sexual abuse by dozens of women over a period of thirty years. More than ninety women in the film industry have accused Weinstein of such acts. His actions costed him being dismissed by The Weinstein Company, expelled from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and other professional associations. It also led a great number of women to share their own experiences of sexual assault, harassment, or rape on social media under the hashtag #MeToo. Jake Joseph Paul is an American actor and YouTube personality who rose to significant fame due to Vine. Paul has many young viewers whom look up to him; however, Paul only acts barbarous in his videos for views and money. He sets an inadequate model for followers. From lighting furniture into flames to kicking out his roommates from his house, Paul defines the meaning of a mindless superstar. Powerlessness is a cause and effect of poverty because people living in absolute poverty often have no political power and is subjected to exploitation by the state. They lack protection, and report widespread corruption within state education and health care systems. Poor people in many countries speak of being kept waiting endlessly while the rich of the country go to the head of the queue. Martin Luther King Jr. was the most important voice of the American civil rights movement, which worked for equal rights for all. He was famous for using nonviolent resistance to overcome injustice, and he never got tired of trying to end segregation laws (laws that prevented blacks from entering certain places, such as restaurants, hotels, and public schools). He also did all he could to make people realize that “all men are created equal.” Because of his great work, in 1964 King received the Nobel Peace Prize. King was assassinated in 1968. With his  death, the country lost not only a great leader, but a prominent person who had carried the power to change society for the better. The loss of King was a loss for people of all races. He made a famous speech that is known as the “I have a Dream” speech. That speech was an inspiration to millions of African-American people.Although having power is important, the duty behind it plays a big aspect within a situation. Regardless, having an insufficient amount of power or lack of power will affect on an individual in society. The capacity to view different perspectives of power is essential. Not only it affects people in society, it creates unnecessary domination. Each person has their own concept of power; it is the matter of the nation whether to act upon it or not.
