Name: Alan CostelloeNumber: 5251890117Research ProposalResearch Area: Anti-lock Brakes “To investigate the main benefit of the anti-lock braking system (ABS).
“Scope Of ResearchThis piece of research will investigate the main benefit of anti lock Brakes in vehicles. The scope of my experimental research will involve two Ford Focus 1.6 diesel 5 door passenger cars manufactured 2018 one with ABS as standard and one without. This test data will be conducted at three different braking speeds 30,50 and 80 kmph in dry conditions. This research will not investigate any other types of motor vehicle.
Motor Vehicle Safety (2015) state that “ABS is an abbreviation for Anti-lock Braking System. It was designed to help the driver maintain some steering ability and avoid skidding while braking.” In simple terms, during emergency braking the wheel does not get locked even if you push fully down on the brake pedal and hence the skidding does not take place. It allows the driver of the vehicle to control the car easier and safer.Anti-lock braking was originally designed for trains in the early 1900s, and was later developed for jet aircraft.
According to Koscs. J (2013) Ford introduced the electronically controlled Sure-Track anti-skid system (ABS), developed by Kelsey-Hayes, for the Thunderbird and Continental Mark III in late 1969.As stated in The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (2015) “ABS is a long established technology that has been mandatory for new cars in the EU since 2004.”The purpose of this study is to show difference in steering when braking with and without anti lock Brakes. This will be measured by the distance between the object after the both vehicles have come to a complete stop.Research MethodResearch Method is defined by Cambridge Dictionary (2018) as “a particular way of studying something in order to discover new information about it or understand it better.
“Stangor (2011) outlines three different research methods:Correlational Descriptive research Experimental research The type of research needed for this proposal is experimental because it is the most scientific type of research.”Primary research is any type of research that you go out and collect yourself. Examples include surveys, interviews, observations.” Brizee. (n.d)The primary research will be the experimental test carried out on both vehicles, at different speeds to determine the distance between each vehicle and the object. The secondary research will be literary review that will be used is the “Preliminary Evaluation of the Effectiveness of Antilock Brake Systems for Passenger Cars.” carried out in (1994)By National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
DATA COLLECTION”Data collection is the systematic approach to gathering and measuring information from a variety of sources to get a complete and accurate picture of an area of interest.” Margaret (2016)When the test is carried out on both vehicles, high speed camcorders will be used to record the vehicles in detail as the anti lock brakes are applied to access how quick the benefits of ABS come into effect. When the vehicles have come to a complete stop a measuring device (measuring tape) will be used to measure the distance between the vehicle and the object it is trying to avoid. The two vehicles data will be compared via a computer and analyzed to show how much distance anti lock brakes helps in avoiding an object.
