Preston MarshWorld HistoryMr. Stewart19 January 2018History Day Research PaperIn the 1950s as rock and roll music increased in popularity. Parents worried about their children listening to sexually inappropriate music. And in the 1960s crowds drugs such as lsd became popular so parents were also worried about that . The Parents Music Resource Center was created by a group of women led by Tipper Gore that believed  the music of the current  generation was inappropriate for young audiences. The United States  Senate held hearings and offered a solution as a compromise;the Parental Advisory Label .  By putting the label on influential music opposed to using censorship. By 1990 nineteen states considered the legislation. The label was revised in 1994 to say “Parental Advisory: Explicit Content.”  and is still in use  years later.                                       The 1950s was a decade of music that changed the world.   Young people were listening to music late at night huddled under their blankets.  They couldn’t believe the music they were hearing.  According to Robert Palmer, “we were believers before we knew what it was that had so spectacularly ripped the dull, familiar fabric of our lives.”  He heard black voices charged with intense emotion and propelled by wildly kinetic rhythm.  Growing up in white bread America, he had never heard anything like.  Kids were instantly fans and parents were concerned.  Elvis Presley is one example of a style of music that parents were concerned about in the 1950s and 1960s.In 1985, the PMRC issued a list of 15 songs—nicknamed the “Filthy Fifteen”—?which it deemed particularly objectionable and deserving of being banned from radio.  Here is the “Filthy Fifteen” list:1PrinceDarling Nikkisex, masturbation2Sheena EastonSugar Wallssex3Judas PriestEat Me Alivesex4VanityStrap on Robbie Babysex5Mötley CrüeBastardviolence6AC/DCLet Me Put My Love Into Yousex7Twisted SisterWe’re Not Gonna Take Itviolence8MadonnaDress You Upsex9W.A.S.P.Animal (Fuck Like A Beast)sex10Def LeppardHigh ‘n Drydrug and alcohol use11Mercyful FateInto The Covenoccult12Black SabbathTrasheddrug and alcohol use13Mary Jane GirlsIn My Housesex14VenomPossessedoccult15Cyndi LauperShe-Bopsex, masturbationWhat happened as a result of the filthy fifteen list being put out is that in turn the Parental Advisory Label was created and was meant to be put on music that was deemed inappropriate for young children to be listening to. In  1990 nineteen states considered the legislation of having the label introduced, on April 6th 1990 the number of states was reduced to about 13  because they wanted to retract their bills that they had made and those 13 states where West Virginia,  Alaska, Arizona, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Maryland, Minnesota, New Mexico, New York, Oklahoma, Rhode Island and Tennessee. And in 1985 the senate hearings including Dee Snider  he is quoted saying to the Committee  “I would like to tell the committee a little bit about myself. I am 30 years old, I am married, I have a 3-year-old son. I was born and raised a Christian and I still adhere to those principles. Believe it or not, I do not smoke, I do not drink, and I do not do drugs.” in all reality this tells us that the music he writes for his band “Twisted Sister ” that all of the lyris are based on his beliefs mentioned in the quote above
