Role Of Female Characters Essay, Research Paper
Concluding Paper Hasib
There s a celebrated stating that goes like this: Behind every great adult male,
there is a great adult female. However, non all work forces are great. All work forces have defects
and adult females help work forces get through tough times and jobs so they can come to
declarations. In the novels The Man Within, Lord Jim, and The Catcher in the
and in the films Fight Club and American Beauty, the female characters
relationships with the male characters are of import and assist the male
characters with their several jobs.
In The Man Within, Andrews job stems from the fact that he has two
separate personalities. In the novel, Andrews said, He was, he knew,
embarrassingly made up of two individuals, the sentimental, intimidation, wanting kid
and another more austere critic. If person believed in me- but he did non believe
in himself. Always while one portion of him spoke, another portion stood on one side
and wondered, Is this I who am talking? Can I truly exist like this? ( Greene
24 ) . What he was seeking to state is that 2 personalities dominated his life. One of
his personalities was called the coward. This personality of his was truly
emotional. He would look at ordinary things and stare at them for long periods
clip and see a batch of beauty in them. This personality besides prevented himself
from standing up for himself and against his frights. One of those frights was his
Nemesis in the novel, Carlyon, who he was seeking to fly from because he
betrayed him by giving the local governments information about his smuggling ring.
Another one of his frights was the fact he couldn t live up to the fable of his
Father, who was known as a great runner but ne’er treated Andrews the manner
he wanted to be treated. The critic in Andrews ever second guessed
everything he did. Whenever Andrews did something or was believing about
making something, the critic in him would oppugn what he did. One illustration of
this was when he was approximately to state Elizabeth why he was running and he was
about to manufacture a narrative but his difficult, critical ego said, You fool, she ll see
through that. Haven t you adequate gratitude to talk the truth ( Greene 70 ) ?
These personalities are polar opposities and Andrews lets them confound him to
the point where he doesn T cognize what to make sometimes. This is where Elizabeth
helps him a great trade.
Elizabeth s relationship with Andrews affects him a batch and helps him
to a declaration at the terminal of the novel. Half manner through the novel of The Man
Within, Andrews falls in love with Elizabeth. Not merely because she s beautiful,
because she has attained a balance in her personality that Andrews wish he
Elizabeth has found a average and that involvements Andrews a batch and is one of the
grounds he is really attracted to her. Elizabeth gives some good advice to
Andrews. At one point, she gives Andrews advice on how to battle the coward
in him by stating, You hesitate and hesitate and so you are lost. Can t you
of all time close your eyes and spring ( Greene 86 ) ? Elizabeth tries to assist Andrews by
doing him travel to the town of Lewes to attest against Carlyon. She besides was
willing to assist Andrews face Carlyon at the terminal of the book. However, it
wasn T until Elizabeth was killed that Andrews found balance in his personality.
He found a in-between land between the coward and the critic but it took the decease
of Elizabeth to happen it. Andrews besides finds out that it wasn t Carlyon that he was
running off from the whole clip. In the novel, he says, There had been no
battle with Carlyon but merely with his male parent. His male parent had made him a
informer and his male parent had slain Elizabeth and his male parent was dead and out of
range. But was he? His male parent s was non a roaming spirit. It had housed itself in
the boy he created. I am my male parent, he thought, and I have killed her ( Greene
215 ) .
In Lord Jim, Jim s job is that everyone thinks he is a coward and he
finally starts believing it. The ground for that is because he jumped off a
ship, called the Patna, filled with eight 100s Islamic pilgrims that he thought
was droping but it wasn t. For this he goes to tribunal, where it turns out everyone
at the town is against him and thinks of him as spineless. Jim is a romantic with
a graphic imaginativeness and the fact that people think of him that manner makes him experience
ashamed and uneasy and he starts believing that he is really a coward. He
wants to be known as a hero and person who is known for making courageous workss.
All he wants is to hold a 2nd opportunity at life so he can turn out himself.
Jim s relationship with Jewel in Patusan is really of import to him. Jewel is
a Malay that Jim meets and falls in love with. From what is read in the novel, it
seems that Jim feels as if Jewel and Patusan represented a 2nd opportunity. A
opportunity where he can turn out that he is, in fact, a good and courageous adult male. In one
scene in the novel, Cornelius is hassling Jewel. Jim found it really
uncomfortable but he didn Ts leave because go forthing the house would hold
appeared a base abandonment ( Conrad 187 ) . He doesn T privation to go forth Jewel
because the state of affairs reminds him of the Patna. Leaving Jewel would hold
like abandoning the Islamic pilgrims on the ship and he did non desire to look like a
coward once more, no affair what his inherent aptitudes say. Jewel besides does other things to
aid Jim in the novel. In one scene, she tells Jim about bravos looking to kill
him and he goes down to where they are concealing and kills them. At the terminal of the
novel, Jim does what he feels is the brave and right thing to make as Doramin putting to deaths
In the film Fight Club, the chief character, Jack, besides has jobs that
a female character, Marla, helps him through. Jack is a dissatisfied adult male who is
populating a dead terminal life. Nothing truly affairs to him except the stuff
ownerships that make him experience complete. So Jack decides to go to support
groups to warm his despair. At these support groups, he meets Marla. She
is merely like him except she doesn t experience the healing that Jack does at the support
groups. Jack is uncomfortable with that. So Jack sub-consciously creates Tyler
Durden, an fanciful personality that is everything Jack wishes he could be and
together they form fight nine. He uses Fight Club to vent his defeats about
life and himself. Near the terminal of the film, Marla helps Jack realize that he
doesn Ts need Tyler Durden as they watch the skyscrapers fall together.
Another film besides has the subject of a female character help the chief
character happen declaration. In the film American Beauty, the character Rickey is
a romantic. He is a batch like Andrews in that he sees beauty in the most ordinary
of things. He normally videotapes things he finds beautiful. In one portion of the
film, he says, Sometimes there & # 8217 ; s so much beauty in the universe I feel like I can & # 8217 ; T
take it, like my bosom & # 8217 ; s traveling to undermine in. Besides like Andrews, nevertheless, is that he
lives in his male parent s shadow and he doesn T stand up to him. His male parent, who
to be a Marine, is seeking to determine Rickey the manner he believes a good individual
should be like and doesn Ts give him room to turn as an person. Rickey so
meets Jane. She is really different so Rickey in that she is really noncompliant against
her parents and most of the clip, doesn Ts follow their wants. They fall in love
and when Rickey s father beats him, Rickey realizes that adequate is adequate and
he eventually stands up to his male parent. Rickey so asks Jane if she is willing to run
off with him to New York. Rickey eventually gets to be his ain adult male and won Ts
hold his male parent stating him what to make any longer.
A Catcher in the Rye is another book that captures the subject that is used
in the other novels and films mentioned. The chief character, Holden
Caulfield, is a 16 twelvemonth old that has flunked out of his 3rd prep school.
Holden s job is that he s afraid of turning up. The procedure of turning up is
a mark of corruptness from Holden s point of position. At one point in the novel,
Holden says, Certain things they should remain the manner they are. You ought to be
able to lodge so in one of those large glass instances and merely go forth them entirely
( Salinger 122 ) . In that quotation mark, Holden shows how he s really much against
The difference between Holden, Rickey, Jack, Jim, and Andrews is the
fact that the female character that helps him is non the adult females he s in love with. I
Alternatively, the female character that helps him is his 10 twelvemonth old sister named
Phoebe. When Holden sees Phoebe for the first clip since coming back to New
York, he notices that Phoebe seems to hold matured a small since the last clip
he spoke to her. The reader besides notices that Phoebe seems to be more mature
and responsible so Holden. When Phoebe tells Holden to close up in one of
scenes, he is surprised. Phoebe has ne’er told Holden to close up earlier. To
him this was a mark of her turning up. In another scene where Phoebe is on a
carrousel and is seeking to make for a gold ring, he says, I was kind of afraid that
she d fall off the goddamn Equus caballus but I didn Ts say anything or make anything. The
thing is with childs, if they want to catch for the gold ring, you have to allow them make it,
and non state anything. If they fall off, they fall away, but its bad if you say anything
them ( Salinger 211 ) . When Holden said that, he understood that both
artlessness and childhood are non lasting. He s fundamentally stating you can t
halt person from traveling into another phase of their life.
Andrews, Jim, Holden, Ricky, and Jack all were work forces with struggles that
female characters helped them through. They all had jobs and the female
characters helped them work out the jobs. However, it depends on the reader
whether each of the consequences was happy or non. One thing is for certain. Behind
every adult male is a great adult female.
