The National Honor Society is an organization that recognizes outstanding high school students. I would be excited to join NHS because of the many opportunities it would offer me to grow as a person and to help my community. While my time in high school, I have shown great examples of scholarship, leadership, character, and service that would qualify me to join NHS. I consider myself to have the quality of scholarship because I always aim to push myself and be the best in everything I do. I make sure to take classes that will challenge me and make me think. I have taken a honors class, an AP class, and eight PreAP classes while in high school, and I aim to continue taking rigorous classes so I can reach my intellectual potential. I have also had all A’s since freshman year and currently have a GPA of 4.52, which takes part in showing my determination and effort in doing my best. My achievements are a reflection of my hard work and commitment to take any chance to be a leader. School is one of the places where my leadership can be seen as I often take the lead within every PBL group I am put in. Being a leader in my PBL groups gives me the opportunity to work in a team and consider others’ ideas to make a project that comes from a diversity of ideas and at the same time has a sense of unity. My personal traits help me to gain trust and respect from my group members as they believe me to be positive, open-minded, and responsible. With these experiences, I have grown to learn how to solve problems within people of different personalities. I also show leadership within the initiative I take to lead different activities. For example, I co-founded the FLO-Champions club that allows members to share their knowledge and experiences with other students about summer programs they’ve attended, and encourage and guide them to create their own experiences by participating in a Fantastic Learning Opportunity (FLO) offered by Discover U. Here, I have arranged recruit meetings for different programs and made flyers. Additionally, I take pride in standing out from the crowd and showing what makes me unique. For example, last year, I was the one student from my cohort that was invited to attend the HERWORLD17 Conference sponsored by Pink Petro and I was voted by my fellow peers as the best overall person. I am not only a leader in school activities, but I also bring my passions to lead and help others to my community. One example of this is my role as a chosen cross-examination coach for the National Hispanic Institute’s Houston region, where I train students in the debate category cross-examination for National Hispanic Institute’s freshman program the Great Debate. This position allows me to use the things I learned when I was a participant in the Great Debate and pass it on to a younger generation and inspire them to think and discuss problems within their own ethnic community. I am not only a leader, but I also give back and play an active role in the communities I lie within, whether it be my church, school, or local community. For example, I volunteered at Energy’s Summer Bridge Camp for incoming freshman as a way to be a familiar face that can help them through their first year of high school. I spent this past summer volunteering at my local hospital, where I helped nurses by filing papers, writing get well cards, and answering phones. This opportunity allowed me to get an insight into my surrounding community and help those in my community that work so hard to help others. I also volunteer at my church and help facilitate events that they hold. Volunteering is an experience that has helped me build character and become a better person. I look forward to continuing my volunteer work in the future because I think that it is my social responsibility to help and be an example for others so that our society becomes what we want it to be.Finally, I believe to have a great character because I always aim to do the right thing whether it is helping someone pick up things they dropped or returning something I found. I always keep the promises I make and complete group work. I have a respectful and positive attitude towards everything I take on. Therefore I believe that with my skills and experiences, I am a strong candidate for NHS. My academic and communal achievements serve as a proof that my personal qualities and dedication demonstrate the qualities of scholarship, leadership, character, and service necessary to join the NHS. Additionally, I am always helping fellow classmates with understanding different concepts and instructions when it is needed. In addition I always volunteer after school for events whenever I can.
