The role of intellectualism in today’s society is what gives us a meaningful life. The distinction between a person going through the motions and a person who engages in a unique and personal life, meaning someone who experiences more or understands more than someone who goes through life without thinking about any sort of philosophical importance or purpose. Critical Thinking is, in short, self-directed, self-disciplined, self-monitored, and self-corrective thinking. It presupposes assent to rigorous standards of excellence and mindful command of their use. It entails effective communication and problem solving abilities and a commitment to overcome our native egocentrism and sociocentrism.      Critical thought serves to develop and analyze the “self”which is one of the most ubiquitous in lexicon and is the surface effect of impersonal or unconscious forces. The concept of self as we discussed relates to things such as self scrutiny, self discipline, and on a larger scale the argument for essentialism vs. constructivism. Essentialism is  a simple binary and concerns eidos. Plato’s concept of eidos refers to form and identity which are crucial tags. Critical thought is paramount for the formation and  analyzation of identity because you can either track on the thought of telelogy and development of an identity based on the natural course of fate or godly intervention, or on the path of constructivism and forming an identity based on interaction and social construction. Identity relates to critical thinking because both teleological and constructivists views require an intellectual analyzation to develop and shape a unique personality for each person.       The role of thought in relation to changes in technology involves transhumanism and techne vs. technology. Techne is human know how vs. technology which is mediation away from human know how through technological advancements Complex thought has led to the development of improved technology but also gives rise to an argument concerning whether technological advances belittle the human condition. Whether the use of technology to improve humans can be dangerous. If we mediate away from human know how intellectual thought may be diminished. However, technology has improved globalization through means of enhanced communication. Our current “network society” is a product of the digital revolution and some major sociocultural changes. One of these is the rise of the “Me-centered society,” marked by an increased focus on individual growth and a decline in community understood in terms of space, work, family, and ascription in general. But individuation does not mean isolation, or the end of community. Instead, social relationships are being reconstructed on the basis of individual interests, values, and projects. Community is formed through individuals’ quests for like-minded people in a process that combines online interaction with offline interaction, cyberspace, and the local space. Media creates a distance between you and the original or authentic. For example, technological reproduction results in the loss of the aura which is that distance between a unique outlook or interpretation and a generalized view, the loss of a personal or magical view. In this way technology diminishes art appreciation and the intellectual analyzation of art.
