The problems facing secondary school teachers in BenueState with particular reference to secondary school teachers in Makurdi LocalGovernment Area of Benue State are numerous.

There is the problem of irregularpayment of the teacher’s salary by the Benue State government which makes itquite difficult for teachers to fulfill their roles in their various homes. Theteacher has to teach under poor teaching and learning environment. So many ofthem have worked for years without promotion. Those that have retired are notpaid their entitlements and this sends a dangerous and discouraging signal tothose still in active service. Meanwhile, on top of all those problems, the teacheris expected to be in school and teach his or her students effectively.

          When studentssit for their Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) and perform poorly,the blame goes to the teacher. All these expectations from the teacher despitehis/her personal problems and without government encouragement mountunnecessary stress on the teacher. The outcome is that the teacher who issupposed to be strong so that he/she can discharge duties to his studentsdevelops health problems. If a teacher is not strong to discharge his/herresponsibilities to his/her students, it will affect students’ academicperformance both in their internal or external examinations.

          It is asa result of all these challenges facing secondary school teachers in thedischarge of their duties that the researcher has embarked on this project workwith the aim of finding out the effect of teachers’ stress on students’academic performance in some selected secondary schools in Makurdi LocalGovernment Area of Benue State.1.3     Purpose of the StudyThe main purpose of the study is to find out the effectof teachers’ tress on students’ academic performance in some selected secondaryschools in Makurdi Local Government Area of Benue State. In order to achievethe main purpose of the study, the following specific objectives are targetednamely;1.

    To find out thecauses of stress among secondary school teachers in Makurdi Local GovernmentArea of Benue State2.    Identify the effectof teachers’ stress on secondary school students’ academic performance and ;3.    Proffer ways ofreducing stress among secondary school teachers in Makurdi Local GovernmentArea of Benue State.

1.4     Research QuestionsThe following questions have been raised for the study;1.    What are the causesof stress among secondary school teachers in Makurdi Local Government Area ofBenue State?2.    To what extent doesteachers stress affect the academic performance of students in secondaryschools in Makurdi Local Government Area of Benue State?3.    How will betterconditions of service for secondary school teachers in Makurdi Local GovernmentArea of Benue State reduce the degree of stress?1.5     Research HypothesisThe following hypothesis have been raised for thestudy;1.    The poor motivationof secondary school teachers by Benue State Government have no significantrelationship with the causes of stress among teachers in secondary schools inMakurdi Local Government Area of Benue State.2.

    The poorperformance of students in Senior School Certificate Examinations (SSCE) haveno significant relationship with the effect of stress n secondary schoolteachers.3.    The implement ofbetter conditions of service for teachers by Benue State government will haveno significant effect in curbing stress among secondary school teachers inMakurdi Local Government Area of Benue State.1.6     Significance of the StudyThe study is significant because it will identify theeffect of teachers stress on students’ academic performance in secondaryschools in Makurdi Local Government Area of Benue State and proffer lasting solutionsto them.Apart from the above, the study will add to theexisting wealth of knowledge in the area of study.

It will also assist otherresearchers who may wish to embark on the same or similar research work in thenear future.1.7     Scope of the StudyThe academic scope of this study is on the effect ofteachers stress on students’ academic performance in some selected secondaryschools, while the geographical scope is Makurdi Local Government Area of BenueState.Due to limited time and financial constraints, theresearcher could not cover all the secondary schools in Makurdi LocalGovernment Area of Benue State. Rather ten (10) secondary schools were randomlyselected for the study. The researcher assumed that whatever might be theeffect of teachers stress on students’ academic performance in the selectedsecondary schools will hold same for the other secondary schools in the area ofstudy.However, despite all the limitations, concrete effortswere made by the researcher to produce a quality research work.1.8     Definitionof TermsFora better understanding of this research work, the following terms have beendefined.Academic Performance:This refers to the outcome of students’ academic activities in the school.Academic Performance:This term refers to the effect of teachers’ stress on the level of students’performance in their studies in secondary schools.Education:This refers to the transmission of worthwhile knowledge, character and valuableskills which will make the learner useful t himself/herself and the society.Effect:This refers to the outcome of teachers stress on students’ academicperformance.Local Government:This refers to the third-tier system of government in Nigeria.Private Schools:This refers to independent or non-governmental schools run and administered byprivate individuals in Nigeria.Public Schools:This term refers to schools that are owned by either the state or federalgovernment of Nigeria.Secondary Schools:This refers to Post – Primary schools either built by the government or privateindividuals in the area of study.Stress:This refers to undue pressure in a teacher which pose a serious health problemto him/her.
