What is the Internet of Things?Simply put, this is the conceptof basically connecting any device with an on and off switch to the Internet(and/or to each other). This includes everything from cellphones, coffeemakers, washing machines, headphones, lamps, wearable devices and almostanything else you can think of.
What is the Internet of Vehicles?The Internet of Vehicles (IoV) isan inevitable convergence of the mobile Internet and the Internet of Things.It’s comprised of all new and current vehicles, either fitted or integratedwith two-way RF equipment. It is a converged technology that encompassesinformation communication, environmental protection, energy conservation, andsafety.
To succeed in this emerging market, acquisition of core technologiesand standards will be crucial to securing strategic advantage. 1 On a broader scale, the IoT andIoV can be applied to things like cities which will make them “smart cities”which can help us reduce waste and improve efficiency for things such as energyuse; this helping us understand and improve how we work and live. Take a lookat the visual below to see what something like that can look like. The reality is that the IoT andIoV allows for virtually endless opportunities and connections to take place,many of which we can’t even think of or fully understand the impact of today.It’s not hard to see how and why the IoT and IoV is such a hot topic today;they certainly open the door to a lot of opportunities but also to manychallenges. One of which is Security. Security Issues With billions of devices beingconnected together, what can people do to make sure that their informationstays secure? Will someone be able to hack into your toaster and thereby getaccess to your entire network? The IoT also opens up companies all over theworld to more security threats.
One can only imagine how the conversation andconcerns will escalate when we are talking about many billions of devices beingconnected.Currentlysecurity law and regulations is still not the main focus, and there is notechnology standard about the IoT. The IoT is related to national securityinformation, business secrets and personal privacy. Therefore, our countryneeds the legislative point of view to promote development of the IoT. Policiesand regulations are urgently needed. In this aspect we have a long way to go. 2 Heterogeneityhas a great influence over the protocol and network security services that mustbe implemented in the IoT. Then, there’s identity management and the issues ofprivacy because, we as users need tools which help us remain anonymous in thisworld super connected world.
We also have an issue of trust and governance andan absolute need for fault tolerance. Themain privacy issue in vehicular networks is location privacy. Vehicles in avehicular network broadcast unencrypted messages that contain a vehicleidenti?er along with the vehicle’s location, speed and heading. In many cases,these data can be linked to the driver’s identity. Using these data, a systemthat is ultimately designed to offer safety and comfort applications to driverscan be abused by third parties, such as employers, insurance companies orcriminal organizations to track individuals. This tracking can reveal sensitivelocations, such as home or work locations, along with the time and duration ofeach visit, effectively allowing one to infer the detailed behavioral pro?lesof drivers. 3 To counter these risks,privacy-enhancing technologies for the IoV and IoT are needed.
To date, thereare very few approaches in the literature that speci?cally target IoV and IoTs.Most notably, the proposed SIoV architecture in 20 attempts to addressprivacy issues. Future privacy-enhancing technologies for IoV and IoT should bebased on proven privacy-enhancing technologies for social networks andvehicular networks. New privacy-enhancing technologies and those resulting fromcombinations of existing technologies need to be evaluated thoroughly to makesure that they provide an adequate amount of privacy. 3 Summary The main goal ofthis paper was to provide an explicit analysis of the features and security challengesof the distribute approach of the Internet of Things, in order to understandwhat is its place in the Future Internet. There are numerous challenges thatmust be solved, such as assuring interoperability, reachingA business model,and managing the authentication and authorization of entities. Still, there aremultiple benefits as well.
