Who Makes aBetter Leader?There have always been assumptionsabout the leadership between men and women.

However, there are manysimilarities between the two that makes them great leaders. Leadership is veryimportant in our everyday life whether they come from males or females. Everydaywomen are continuing to make major impacts and becoming more influential butthey are still being compared to men.

For years, women fought to receive equalrights and respect among not only men but also from themselves. Both men andwomen have become thriving leaders but in this generation women have proventhat they can not only lead better but they can do it in an outstandingfashion.  Leadership is not just a set of skillsand learned behaviors. Leadership is quality that is hidden in a personality. Aleader is a person who inspires, motivates, empowers and guides people ofcommunities, organizations and even their households to achieve a goal. Anyonecan develop to become a leader but there are certain traits and characteristicsthat set people apart from being a good leader and a great leader. Great leadership and good leadership have clearlydifferent characteristics and paths.

A good leader is a person of virtue,ethics and morality. They keep a good thinggoing by leading their followers in a good direction. A good leader is aperson that makes a good decision to do the right thing.  Doing good doesn’t getrecognized, it’s getting by but a great leader shows force.

Great leadership is dominating, influential and oftenoverwhelming. Great leadership strengthens, motivates, and stimulates. A greatleader leaves a powerful effect, influence and change in someone’s life becausethey go over and beyond to make sure that their work leaves an impact. Greatleaders can found everywhere but they have to be given a chance.

Spainexperienced rapid societal changes and different starting conditions for genderequality development compared with the United States and other Europeancountries.

Traditionally, women are more associated with being concerned aboutthe well-being of others and thereby with communal attributes such as beingsupportive, gentle, empathetic, and caring, whereas men are more associatedwith agentic attributes such as being assertive, controlling, dominant, and competitive.In the past, women perceived leadership roles as less accessible. With theopportunity to lead, transformational leadership behavior was shown morecongruent with the female gender role and thereby provides women with anopportunity to show that a leadership role is not determined by their genderrole. Transformational leaders are defined as being inspirational role models,considering their employees individually, supporting their employees’development, and motivating their employees by communicating theirvisions. Although inspirational motivation is also relevant for men, womentend to use the more effective leadership styles. In theworkplace, diversity has drawn a lot of attention. With different generations,race and especially gender in one place multiple ideas and styles are created.  M. Ho,Annie Yuansha Li, Kinsun Tam and Feida Zhang in theirarticle “CEOGender, Ethical Leadership, and Accounting Conservatism” indicatethat males and females are biologically and psychologically different, and theleadership characteristics of female CEOs are largely unexplored because females are stereotyped in theworkplace frequently by describing them as being less assertive, lessaggressive, less overconfident, more anxious, more risk averse, and more ethical.When actually females in the workplace, especially female CEOs is reportedto contribute to a better internal control environment with a stronger emphasison conservative and ethical financial reporting. Female characteristics arereferred as a weakness. Understanding a female points of view could be a greatbenefit because it helps achieve a closer look at the bigger picture whichexpands the horizon of different situations, problems, and solutions. Although their characteristicsare different men tend to rate themselves higher because of not only their egobut also from what were taught as children. Times has changed and the societyhas to be open to new changes however, there are still a few that believe thatthings should stay the same.  A proportion of women in leadershippositions has grown over the past decades, women are still underrepresented inleadership roles. Hernandez Bark, Niels VanQuaquebeke, Rüdiger Hossiep, Philip Frieg and Rolf Van Dick in “GenderDifferences in Leadership Role Occupancy: The Mediating Role of PowerMotivation” discuss studies that inform measures targeted at increasing theshare of women in leadership positions. To prove the study the authorsdetermined whether women and men differ in their levels of power motivation andwhether potential gender differences in this motivation contribute to theunequal distribution of women and men in leadership positions.

The results showthat women consistently reported lower power motivation than men. It also suggestthat the higher level of power motivation among men is greater because theenvironment is male dominated. In other words men get the tasks completedthrough motivations from fear. Men are dominate, assertive and persistentbecause that is the traditional way of measuring power.

What if a female wasassert then they would be referred to as a bitch. Women are not like men andthat’s a good thing because everyone should be different, however, thestandards and views of males and females should be changed.             Since thebeginning of time, gender has played an impactful role on how ones act and howones look at society. Powell supports that argument inthe article “The Gender and Leadership Wars” by bringing the attention toleadership and gender stereotypes. Powell states, “No matter how they may be stereotyped, leaders ofboth sexes need to be ready to demonstrate their capabilities as leaders and todisprove anyone who thinks otherwise.” The significance of his statement not onlypromotes effective leadership but also gender equality. Although in hisresearch shows that women tend to be better suited than mento serve as leaders in the ways required in the global economy. However, this isnot to say that organization should choose women for leader roles on the basisof their sex. The challenge for organizations is to take advantage of anddevelop the capabilities of allindividuals in leader roles and then create conditions that give leaders ofboth sexes an equal chance to succeed.

The goal is not to downgrade males, the goal is to show thatfemales are capable, dominate and as effective as much as males. What makes afemale important in a household or any work field is that they have anadvantage over men. Being a female means to be caring, kind and heartwarming whichis where the advantage comes into play. Males use feminine stereotypes againstthem but females use it to their advantage. The feminine characteristics iswhat makes them different from males. It’s the niche that sets them apartbecause they are caring, they are supportive but most of all they areeffective. Samantha C.

Paustian-Underdahl and and David J. Woehr explain thatall in their article Gender and Perceptions of Leadership Effectiveness: AMeta-Analysis of Contextual Moderators.” In the article it states, “Despite evidence that men aretypically perceived as more appropriate and effective than women in leadershipposition.” Their results show that when all leadership contexts are considered,men and women do not differ in perceived leadership effectiveness. Women arerated as significantly more effective than men because of their multipleadvantages that makes them great leaders.

Oftentimes men andwomen use different processes for decision making and leadership. With womenobtaining higher positions in the workplace we have to understand that there isa difference. Whether it is the way they process information, the differentleadership and communication styles, men and women are different. Everyone hasto accept that there are multiple ways to gather, understand and present material.Males are normally raised to see a certain point of view. A view that shows mento be dominate and superior beings however, the information from this course demonstrationsa different view that gives opportunities.

Women shouldn’t have to live up towhat men say is acceptable, they create their own lane. Women are great leadersnot because they aren’t males but because they bring something new to thetable.             Women are aforce to be reckoned with. More and more women are rising to the challenge of leadership.

With the opportunities that they have worked so hard for and which are well-earnedand deserved, they are able to make a change. Everyday more women are attendingcollege, accepting jobs and positions in a male dominated industries and ifthey have a vision of a style, they make their own by creating their ownbusinesses. Women have proven that they are accomplished and can be nurturingmothers as well as great leaders. Women areslowly being accepted into the wheels of power because the world is finally realizingtheir potential in leadership. This clearly shows that leadership is notdetermined by one’s gender but by the abilities that they possess.
